TO: All Airport Users
FROM: Airport Management
SUBJ: Vehicle operations on the airport.
The airport experienced a very near miss between a vehicle and a C-172 on the tower ramp on January 20th. The estimate was they missed by about 5 feet after both taking evasive action. This is unacceptable, and should not have happened. The tower calls me almost daily to chase down a vehicle that is far exceeding the 15MPH limit.
The college and the tower would like to see the tower ramp closed to all private vehicles. I would like to avoid this as it would prove to be an inconvenience to our users who do abide by the rules of operating on the non-movement areas of the airport. Unfortunately, it will only take one airplane/vehicle accident and I would be forced to take that action.
The FAA was notified of the January 20th incident, and I would be willing to share their letter with anyone who would like to read it. They recommend we establish a safety committee to meet quarterly to discuss safety concerns and rectify them. If you are interested in serving on such a committee please call or email me. I would expect the meetings to be during the day on a Friday and last around an hour.
When operating on the airport, if not necessary, please consider not traveling from one end of the airport to the other through the tower ramp.
If you are a condo rep or a business receiving this letter please pass it on to all others that operate on the airport.
Thank You.
